With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, sometimes we forget to focus on what’s truly special about the holidays. Aside from our own religious beliefs, the spirit of the holidays is about hope, peace, love, compassion. I was reminded of this twice just this week.
On Monday, I was making my usual Starbucks run after dropping off my daughter from school, still groggy, thinking about the million things I need to tackle that day when the cashier told me that the car in front of me paid for me already. (Um, Whaat??!!) I was shocked! Someone actually paid for me out of the kindness of their heart?? Stop it! I couldn’t believe it. I think sometimes we’re so wrapped up in our day-to-day grind that we forget how much a small act of kindness, like paying for someone’s coffee, can positively affect their day. I decided to continue the kind gesture by paying for the car behind me, because that’s what the holidays are about – spreading a little joy.
Today, I had another beautiful reminder about what the holidays are all about when I received a heartwarming video in my inbox. This video takes a look at an extremely close-knit, positive family with two selfless parents that run their own psychology clinic and a household with two children – a vibrant 8-yr-old Ayana and their outspoken 4-yr-old son, RJ. About a year and a half ago their lives were flipped upside-down when Ayana was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. They are still adapting to their “new normal” – living life in the moment and cherishing every moment. When T.J.Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods learned that Ayana spent most of the days leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas in the hospital undergoing treatments, they wanted to do make sure this holiday was different!
It’s truly an uplifting video and I encourage you all to watch and share and maybe even pass along a little holiday joy yourself.
